2017 Year in Review


While the opening of Poydras Park may have been the most notable accomplishment this year, 2017 was filled with generous donations, concerts, book sales, commemorations, 5 new board members, and more. The Pointe Coupee Historical Society thanks all of those who have donated time and resources towards our organization. As we move forward with our growing board and many new faces, we encourage you to renew or join our society by filling our the membership application online! With a new event already set in the books, we're looking forward to another successful year.

January:

  • Teresa Houston was nominated to continue as president for PCHS. Mrs. Houston is serving as president for the second year.

  • Steve Bergeron was asked to join the Board by Jimmy Duckworth and the board unanimously voted him as a member.

  • Joanna Wurtelle donated $5,000 to PCHS in conjunction with the Early Childhood Coalition.

  • The 150th Birthday Commemoration of General Lejeune was celebrated on January 7th.

  • Pelican State Chamber Music Concert String and Piano Music performed by musicians from Nicholls State University

  • Louis Curet family made a donation of $16,000, which was used to initiate the reconstruction of the sidewalks.

  • Website went live and monthly meeting minutes are published online.

February:

  • Joseph and Tammy Jarreau donated $4,600 towards the preservation of the Julien Poydras Succession.

  • Landscape Project initiated by Jimmy Duckworth by gaining initial plans for the first stage.

March:

  • Pelican State Chamber Music Concert honoring Mrs. Pat Laurent on the occasion of her 90th birthday.

  • PCHS volunteered for the Bartram Trail Conference at St. Francis Chapel.

  • Landscape project was officially launched.

April:

  • PCHS participated at Market at the Mill and several books were sold, including many copies of New Roads and Old Rivers.

  • Started planting trees in Poydras Park. Total of 3.

May:

  • Nancy Bergeron was hired as the new Office Manager and Event Coordinator.

  • NRG chose PCHS in their Global Giving Day program and began reconstruction of a room that suffered water damage. NRG also made a $1,000 donation.

June/July:

  • Blake Scheeler was unanimously voted as a board member.

  • Twelve trees have been named for the Landscape Project.

August:

  • Landscape project officially named "Poydras Park."

  • Sold and planted the remainder of trees in Poydras Park.

  • Online registration made available.

September:

  • Dedication & reception for Poydras Park. Donors, dignitaries & family members attended. Annual Meeting held in conjunction with the dedication.

  • Pelican State Chamber Music--- Concert featuring guitarist, Jorge Luis Zamora

October:

  • Planning of Phase II of Poydras Park began. Plans to include addition of benches, water fountains, and sidewalks.

November:

  • Pelican State Chamber Music Concert featuring piano and strings by Beethoven and Brahms.

  • Market at the Mill and Book Author signing. Local and area authors signed their books each day at the Market.

  • Janet Humphreys, Carlyn Morales, and Johnny Hornsby unanimously voted on as Board Members of PCHS.

December:

  • Began encouraging public to register and preserve oak trees. Oak Tree Tour set for spring of 2018. More information to come.

  • "Rosenwald" screening was purchased for a showing in February to local schools and general public.
