Poydras Park in Progress

The Pointe Coupee Historical Society is continuing to seek donations towards trees in Poydras Park in honor of a loved one or family member and several donations have been made by families and individuals to reserve trees. Twenty-two nursery-grown trees have been located and reserved for Poydras Park. The Historical Society began offering the opportunity for families and individuals to give money to dedicate a tree in honor of or in memory of a loved one in February of 2017. Trees are being planted in stages, or upon purchasing, depending on the size and variety of the tree. On September 16, 2017, those who have donated to the Pointe Coupee Historical Society towards the dedication of a tree, will be honored at the Poydras Park Ceremony. Donations need to be made in full by August 15th to guarantee the planting of the tree for the day of the ceremony. More information will be announced at a later date regarding the dedication. At the end of 2016, crews of volunteers and professionals removed the old broken concrete sidewalks, leveled the lawn, and formed and poured new concrete walks identical to those installed almost a hundred years ago. Nick Musso, project manager for Suzanne Turner Associates, says, “This installation will bring appropriate scale back to this fine old building, and create a picturesque landscape for New Roads.” If you are interested in dedicating a tree for the new Poydras Center landscape, please call Nancy Bergeron, event coordinator for the Historical Society, at (225) 638-6575.
